Že wą́gížą éja, ų́ną́kže, hų́gé cígíže éja, gi hijanéra haną́c giyázireže.
There a man there, he was, chief he lived there and the others all they had run away.

Hotócą́ižą, "hohégų́r̨a,"* áiregi, haną́c giyáziregi. Éšąnąxjį jᆠų́ną́kže. Hų́gé
A war party, ? it is called, and all they fled. Only that one there he was left. A chief

* hohégų́ is a hapaxlegomenon, a word hitherto not encountered. The context suggests that a hohégų́ is a specific kind of warparty.
is a front clip contraction of ejá.

cígi éja, hų́k hocíž(ą), hų́géregiži, wa‘ų́ną́kže. Ną́háici,
he [having] lived there, chief a lodge, [it had become the chief's,] that’s what it was. Bark gable lodge,

"ciósewe," áires’agi, žéesgéže(‘ų?), éja wa‘ų́ną́kže. Péjı̨́gra gų́†
"a bark house,"* as it is called, that’s what they say, [there] that’s what it was. The little fire [now]

káhaesganįąje (?)* gų́ egų́,* ną’ústerá kiwewiošánąka (??)† éja ų́ną́k —
[he made didn't amount to anything (?)], [now] [so,] [embers] - there he was —

* this word is unintelligible.
† the meaning of this expression is not known. However, compare kiwewíwį, "he thought to himself."

he was sitting. Then something he heard a little, so he listened, someone was saying something,

[outside ... they spoke]* there was some whispering, [it is said.] [There] Menominee he was doing the talking,

péjéjegú* hožú, egų, ų́ja’ų, gų́egų, tā’éhìže. Égiegų,† éja žéną́ką.
in the fire he put, well, [finally] doing thus, he lit it. And so, that’s as far as it goes.
