Letter Frequency Inventory

Originally, when the Lexicon stood at 8,330 entries, the letters of the Hotcâk phonetic alphabet were counted. In this revised inventory, the number of wordlist entries now stands at 22, 260. The resultant inventory is of some interest in indicating (perhaps imperfectly) the distribution of sounds in the language. The count may be skewed slightly towards the upper end of the alphabet ('-ha).

The letter 'ñ' exists in a number of early sources. Later Radin replaced it with the nazalization of the preceding vowel, for example, 'Hotcañk' > 'Hotcâk'. The letter (') is counted only in its initial position before a vowel. The frequency for 'j' does not include its occurence in 'dj'. The same rule applies in all similar cases. For the values of the phonetic letters and different orthographies, see Hotcâk Syllabary, Transliteration, and Pronunciation.
